Every sales team needs a rally cry. A hill to take, a call to action.  At this year’s VMware PartnerExchange conference, the virtualization leader’s Executive Vice President of Sales, Carl Eschenbach, delivered that message.

With a  record 2700 solution provider attendees, this year’s conference was all about VMware’s cloud computing long-term market vision.  Eschenbach’s call to action was for the company’s solution providers to “be rainmakers.”   “This is the year the cloud will start to produce big results.  I’m telling my sales team and solution providers, let it rain.”

The VMware management team revealed its vision around enabling the deployment of both public and private cloud environments at last year’s event.  But that message was reinforced this year and bolstered by messages about the integration of the company’s recent SpringSource and Zimbra acquisitions into an IT “front office” application push.

Research presented this week indicates that 38% of CIOs plan to deploy desktop virtualization this year, With 330 million PCs to be virtualized in the market, the company’s management team conveyed a sense of urgency at the event for solution providers to invest in the company’s relatively new solution certifications around desktop virtualization.

Although there are still skeptics about VMware’s ability fully capitalize on the application development environment inherent in SpringSource, they agree that application virtualization and moving legacy applications into a virtualized environment is critical to cloud adoption.

Further to the company’s cloud domination aspirations, the buzz around the Zimbra booth was apparent.  The innovative messaging and collaboration SaaS provider touts 55 million mailboxes — more users than Google.  The recently acquired technology will be leveraged heavily by VMware with solution providers (especially service providers) to offer virtualized hosted infrastructure.

Despite the fact that VMware has a healthy competitive respect for its Redmond rival, the Azure platform took its fair share of bruises this week. But, now that VMware has declared its ambitious cloud computing vision, there will surely be an aggressive and visible race for virtualization and cloud-savvy solution and service providers.
